Pricing What It Actually Costs

How much does digital
marketing cost?

Every agency quotes a different number and most won't tell you why. Here are the real 2026 ranges Australian businesses and brands pay, channel by channel, plus how to tell if you're being overcharged, and a free custom quote with no lock-in.

The short answer: $1,000 to $5,000 a month for most businesses

That is the range most Australian businesses and brands land in once you add up the channels they actually run. Quotes vary wildly because "digital marketing" is not one job, it is four or five different jobs with very different cost structures, and because agencies package them differently. This page breaks down what each one costs in 2026, what sits inside an agency fee, and how to work out what your business should be spending rather than what someone wants to charge you.

What are you actually paying for?

Almost every dispute about price comes from this question going unanswered. Four billing models exist in the Australian market, and they are not interchangeable.

  • Monthly retainer. A fixed fee for an agreed scope of ongoing work. Standard for SEO, social media and ads management, because those need continuous work to hold ground.
  • Project fee. A one off amount for a defined build, such as a website or a campaign launch. Clear start and finish.
  • Percentage of ad spend. Used for paid media management. The agency fee moves with your budget.
  • Hourly. Common with consultants and freelancers, rare for agency retainers, and the hardest to forecast.

Inside a retainer, the cost is usually split across five things: strategy, content and creative production, media or platform management, reporting, and account management. Two agencies can quote the same headline number and allocate it completely differently. A quote that will not itemise those five lines is not a quote you can compare.

Cost by channel

SEO: $750 to $2,500 a month

Ongoing local and organic SEO. Below about $500 a month you are usually buying automated link spam that risks a penalty. SEO is slow to start and compounds for years, which is why it is priced as a retainer rather than a project. See our dedicated SEO for business page.

Google Ads: management 10 to 20% of spend

Management is typically $500 to $1,500 a month on top of your actual ad budget. Unlike SEO the leads stop the day you stop paying, and it is the fastest way to test whether demand exists at all. Most businesses start with $1,000 to $3,000 a month in ad spend. Ask whether the percentage is charged on spend or on spend plus fee, and whether there is a floor.

Social media management: $1,000 to $3,000 a month

Done for you content across LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. The variable that moves this number most is whether the content is original or templated, and whether anyone is answering comments and messages. See social media management for what each tier includes, or the full social media cost breakdown.

WeChat and Xiaohongshu: from $3,000 a month

Chinese platform management is priced separately because it is a different operating model, not a translation of your English content. Xiaohongshu as a single platform starts at $3,000 a month. Xiaohongshu plus WeChat runs $5,000 to $9,000 a month. Account setup, covering official verification and store wiring, is a one off $4,000 to $8,000. Australia has a Chinese background population of about 1.4 million on census figures, and almost no local agency operates these platforms natively. Details on the service page.

Influencer and creator campaigns: priced per campaign

Creator work is quoted per campaign rather than as a flat retainer, because the cost is driven by how many creators, what tier, and what usage rights you buy. The two questions that move the number most are exclusivity and whether you can run the content as paid media afterwards. Our creator cost guide walks through agency fees and creator rates line by line, and how to structure the deal covers flat fee versus commission.

Website: $3,000 to $15,000 one off

A fast, mobile first business site built to convert. The range depends on page count, custom design and functionality. Every other channel sends traffic to it, so it is rarely the place to cut.

How much should a small business pay for digital marketing?

The common answer is a percentage of revenue. For a small business that answer is close to useless, because the percentage assumes a marketing function that already works and a revenue base big enough to average out. Work backwards instead.

  • What is one new customer worth to you over twelve months, not on the first sale?
  • How many new customers do you need this year?
  • What is a lead worth, given the share of leads you actually close?
  • What can you afford to pay for a lead and still make money?

That last figure is your real budget ceiling, and it has nothing to do with what an agency wants to charge. A business closing one in five leads on a customer worth $5,000 can afford a very different number from a business closing one in twenty on a customer worth $400. Once you have it, the channel mix is an arithmetic problem rather than an argument.

The second rule matters more than the first. Fund one channel properly rather than three at the minimum. Three underfunded channels produce three sets of inconclusive data and no result. This is the single most common way an Australian small business wastes a marketing budget.

What does a digital marketing agency charge in Australia?

Agency retainers here generally sit in three bands, and ours are published rather than quoted on request:

  • $1,000 to $3,000 a month. One channel run properly. Suits a business testing whether marketing works for it at all.
  • $3,000 to $5,500 a month. A growth engagement. Two or three channels working together with real reporting.
  • $6,000 to $9,000 a month. An established programme. Multi channel, bilingual where relevant, with strategy and creative production carried in house.

A freelancer usually costs less and delivers one skill. A consultant sells judgement rather than execution, which means you still need someone to do the work afterwards. An in house hire costs more than any of these once you add on costs, tools and the time to manage them, and only pays off past a certain volume of work. None of these is better in the abstract. The question is which one matches the amount of work you actually have.

What is a reasonable cost per lead?

There is no honest national average, because a solar lead, a dental patient and a B2B enquiry have nothing in common. What is useful is a worked example from a real campaign rather than a benchmark table.

For E Cubic Energy, an Australian solar and battery retailer, our paid programme produced 300+ leads in 30 days at a $1.77 average cost per click, with 294 additional leads through Meta. The Chinese language search campaigns ran at a 20.19% click through rate against an industry norm of 1.5 to 3%. Those numbers belong to one advertiser in one category with a specific offer, and they are not a promise about yours. Read the case.

The point of the example is the method. Ask any agency for a cost per lead from a comparable category, and ask what the close rate on those leads was. An agency that can only show you impressions and reach is not measuring the thing you are buying.

Does digital marketing cost more in Sydney than Melbourne or Perth?

Agency fees do not vary much by city in Australia, because the work is remote and the talent market is national. What does vary is paid media. Cost per click is set by how many advertisers are bidding in your category and location, so a competitive Sydney category can cost meaningfully more per lead than the same category in Perth or Adelaide. If a quote is materially higher because of your postcode, ask which line item the postcode affects.

How to tell if you are being overcharged

Five things to check before you sign. The first three are the ones that cost people money.

  • Lock in longer than a quarter. A twelve month contract protects the agency, not you. Month to month forces the work to justify itself.
  • No itemised scope. If you cannot see what each line buys, you cannot tell the difference between a good price and a bad one.
  • Reporting in reach and impressions only. Those are inputs. Ask what the money produced in enquiries, bookings or sales.
  • You do not own what is built. Accounts, pixels, content and data should be registered to your business, not the agency.
  • Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed followers. Nobody controls those. What can be committed to is a system and a rhythm of work.
